Web Design Advice and Web Site Pricing
Many people ask the question How Much Does A Web Site Cost? below I will attemp to answer this question.
It is very difficult to generalise when it comes to Web Design prices. Costs can vary considerably dependant upon the amount of work involved and the complexity of the Website required.
What I will say is that there are certain things that the customer can do to make the Web Designers job easier and therefore make for a lower cost Website.
I would like to stress at this point that there is no such thing as a cheap Website, adverts for £99 web sites are usually just that, £99 Websites!
You will generally get what you pay for.
Making your content available electronically will make the migration of any existing or new content to the Internet much quicker, easier and less error prone.
Trying to transcribe large pieces of text from paper is very time consuming and error prone. As you may appreciate having to do this will increase the cost of any website development work.
It should also be borne in mind that having to research and write copy for a particular subject is also labour intensive and you should endeavour to provide as much of the content yourself,
this material will have to be re-worked for the Internet anyway so don’t worry too much about how it is written at the moment.
The complexity of the site will obviously influence the cost. Don’t be too ambitious with your first site. Ask yourself Do I Really Need This? when considering particular functionality.
Just because you have seen it on someone else’s site does not necessarily mean you need it on yours. I will be able to advise you about this but bear in mind that certain things can be costly to implement.
Search engine optimisation, although important, takes time to research and will therefore add to overall web site cost.
If have written a New Web Site Design Questionnaire for new clients. I have produced this in the hope that it will help in the process of specifying what you want from your web site.
This can be downloaded here.New Web Site Design Questionnaire.pdf
So having considered all of the above the figures given below are guide prices only and will hopefully give you some idea of typical web site development costs.
Remember that I offer a personal service to my customers and so the quote I will give you for your site will based on consultation with you the customer on your individual requirements.
Typically a simple site (two to six pages) with our in house web site hosting package for the first year would be around £150 - £250.
Sites with more complex requirements will range from this up to around £1000+ for a fully functional eCommerce site.
Remember to allow for the cost of running your web site also. Web Site Hosting needs to be added on top these prices and is usually billed monthly or annually, you will also need to budget for site updates and domain name renewal on top of this as well.
Please refer to my Terms and Conditions for more information on this.
